Meet Somers Animal Hospital
Wildlife Rehabilitation
On September 6th, 2005, a bear was added to the long list of wildlife that has been treated in our hospital. The male yearling, American Black Bear, was hit by a car on the Taconic State Parkway near Fahnestock State Park. After transport to our hospital, radiographs revealed mild trauma to his chest and abdomen and a complete fracture of his right femur (thigh bone). The next day the bear was taken to surgery and the fracture was repaired using a bone plate. Upon recovering from surgery, the bear was taken to a rehabilitation facility in upstate NY where he stayed for 2 weeks before being released back in the area he was originally found in.
In March of 2008 we were asked by Teatown Lake Reservation, an environmental education center and nature preserve in Ossining, NY, to perform surgery on their resident Bald Eagle, Gryphon. Gryphon was non-releasable due to an injury causing an inability to fully use the right wing. There was a non-healing wound on the skin of the right shoulder that was not responding to medical treatment. Somers Animal Hospital and our consulting surgeon, Dr. Robert Steckel, donated our services to try and repair the wound.
The surgery was successful and Gryphon is doing very well.
